How to Become a Medical Assistant in Ohio?

Are you ready to start your career as a medical assistant in Ohio? Here are some important steps to help guide you on your path.

Education

In Ohio, you can start working as a medical assistant without formal education, but getting an education can be a smart move for your career. It will give you important knowledge and skills that will help you on the job. If you decide to pursue formal education, you have two options:

  • Medical Assistant Certificate Programs: These programs are designed to help you start your healthcare career quickly. They usually take around nine months to a year to complete and prepare you for entry-level medical assistant jobs.
  • Associate Degree in Medical Assisting: An associate degree gives you a strong career foundation and can earn you credits if you decide to pursue a bachelor’s degree later on.

While Ohio doesn’t require formal education, most employers prefer candidates with education from an accredited school. This wasn’t as common in the past, but now, employers recognize that formal training helps protect doctors and healthcare facilities.

Certification

Since Ohio doesn’t require a specific certification for medical assistants, you can choose the one that fits your career goals.

While many employers in Ohio accept any of the nationally recognized certifications, some might prefer a specific certification depending on the area you work in, like pediatrics or oncology.

If you already know which employers you want to work for, it’s a good idea to check their job listings to see which certifications they prefer.

Across the country, the common certifications for medical assistants are the –

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • CMAA (Certified Medical Administrative Assistant) – National Healthcareer Association
  • CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant) – National Healthcareer Association
  • NCMA (National Certified Medical Assistant) – National Center for Competency Testing
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • RMA-AAH (Registered Medical Assistant) – American Allied Health

Jobs and Employers

You can consider several job boards to get the relevant job options specifically in Ohio.

These include LinkedIn, Hiring Cafe, Indeed, or SimplyHired

Also, you have the option to look for different allied healthcare organizations that are open for hiring.
