What Courses do the Medical Assistant Training Programs have to offer?

MED01: Computer Fundamentals

The course provides students with skills to provide administrative, creative, or technical
services. Students will acquire communication skills, time management and organization, and technical proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other administrative and Internet-based software programs.

Students will learn to work with online collaboration apps for task management and project tracking. In addition, students will learn to use virtual meeting tools such as Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet.

Prerequisite: None

The course introduces students to the legal relationships of physicians and patients, contractual agreements, professional liability, malpractice, medical practice acts, informed consent, and bioethical issues.

Students will learn legal terms, professional attitudes, and the principles and basic concepts of ethics and laws involved in providing medical services. Upon completion, students should be able to meet the legal and ethical responsibilities of a multi-skilled health.

Prerequisite: None

The course covers word-building rules, prefixes, suffixes, and whole-body terminology.
Students will learn terms covering anatomy and physiology, pathological conditions, and diagnostic treatments and procedures. Terms relating to each body system and medical specialty are included.

The course introduces students to basic anatomy and physiology. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between body structure and function and the procedures common to health care.

Students should be able to identify body system components and functions, relating this knowledge to the delivery of health care.

The course introduces medical assisting students to the study of medications and drugs. Students will learn the sources of drugs, their generic and brand names, the legal classification of drugs, routes and drug administration and describe drug interactions.

Prerequisite: MED03R

This course teaches students how to perform blood collection using various methods, such as vacuum collection, syringes, capillary skin puncture, and butterfly needles. You’ll also learn about specimen handling, processing, and labeling, with a focus on infection prevention and patient safety. Certification for Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) is offered by the National Healthcare Association (NHA).

Prerequisite: MED04

In this course, students will learn about the different systems in the human body, like the skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, and others. You’ll also study how these systems work together. The course will also teach basic anatomy and physiology, which are essential for anyone pursuing a career in healthcare.
Students will also work as part of a healthcare team. You’ll learn basic first aid, how to take vital signs, how to prepare and educate patients, and how to perform basic clinical procedures. The course also includes setting up exam rooms, assisting with minor surgeries, learning about radiology, and giving injections and medications.

Prerequisite: MED03/04A and MED28

This course prepares students to work as part of a healthcare team. You’ll learn basic first aid, how to take vital signs, how to prepare and educate patients, and how to perform basic clinical procedures. The course also includes setting up exam rooms, assisting with minor surgeries, learning about radiology, and giving injections and medications.

Students in this course will learn and practice using a common medical records management software application in a simulated medical office. Students will learn and practice entering patient information, posting charges, payments, running financial reports, and filing insurance claims.

Prerequisite: MED03R

This course introduces students to how an EKG machine works and prepares students for EKG Technician Certification. You’ll learn how to use the machine, where to place the sensors, and how to read and interpret the printouts. EKG certification is provided by NHA and AAH.

Prerequisite: MED18/19

The course is a review of the activities and responsibilities that a medical assistant may perform as part of the job. The course prepares students to sit for the national certification exam.

Prerequisite: MED03R/05/28/33/30/32

In this course, students will learn CPR and basic life-saving techniques based on the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support (BLS) guidelines. You’ll practice CPR and learn how to assist someone who is choking.

Prerequisite: None

The course enables students to develop and plan for career advancement. Students will learn resume writing, interviewing, networking, effective communication, managing time effectively, and the use of internet-based websites in the job search. A one-on-one mock interview will be conducted.

Prerequisite: None

Upon successful completion of all academic courses in the student’s Allied Health program, the student participates in an Externship at an approved facility. The Externship enables students to work in the medical environment and apply the principles and practices learned in the classroom.

Externs work under the direct supervision of qualified personnel in participating facilities and under the supervision of a person with appropriate instructor credentials.

Prerequisite: All Academic Courses in the Assigned Program.
